Back to the Fatherland

The story of young people leaving their home country to try their luck somewhere else. A universal tale in today’s globalized world, weren’t these young women and men moving from Israel to the countries where their families were persecuted and killed less than a century ago, Germany and Austria. A film for the 3rd generation by the 3rd generation.

Gil and Kat are friends since their college days in New York. Gil's is from Israel and the granddaughter of Holocaust survivor, Kat the grandchild of a Nazi officer. Despite these substantial differences in their background they developed a close friendship.

“Do you have to ignore the past to build your own future?”

In their quest to move beyond their families’ legacies we meet Dan and Guy, two young Israelis, whose decision to live in Austria and Germany has affected their relationship with their grandparents, friends and families.

The film deals with the third generation on both sides of the historic tragedy and with the attempt to build their own future without ignoring the past.
